INSIDE THE VOLCANO

Ever wanted to go into a volcano?

Explore the inside of a unique dormant volcano that last erupted about 4,000 years ago. The tour starts with a about 45-60 minutes/3 km hike (each way), to the crater. When you’ve reached the crater you’ll decent 120m  in an open cable lift  into the giant crater once filled with steaming hot lava. The beauty of the crater mostly consists in the various coloration found inside it and its enormous.  The ground space is equivalent to almost three full-sized basketball courts planted next to each other and the height is such that it would easily fit full sized Statue of Liberty into the chamber. It’s huge!

Þríhnúkagígur crater is an exceptional place as generally the magma chambers collapse after an eruption. It is one of very few places in the world where you can actually enter a volcano’s magma chamber.
