On this challenging hike you will reach the highest point of rocky volcano in the Hengill area.
Mt. Hengill is an active volcano but even though it has been dormant for about 2.000 years it’s an important source of energy for the south of Iceland. On the way to the top we ascend about 500 meters through rocky volcanic environment, steep and rocky valleys and and narrow rock sills above steep cliffs. The highest peak, Mt. Skeggi (805 m.), is a high hyaloclastite and diorite mountain and from the top there’s an amazing 360° view on a clear day, over Þingvellir Lake, Iceland’s capital Reykjavik, Langjökull glacier and Lambafellshraun lava fields. On the way down we follow flatters tracks, in valleys with moss, grass, gravel and geothermal hot springs.
The hike is physically challenging, mainly on paths/tracks less traveled.
